Description: Ithaca Style cable railing.
When our clients purchased a beach house in Sea Bright, New Jersey, they didn’t want to take any risks with the extreme weather of the coastal region. The couple hired Raad Studio to design a “disaster-resistant” home they could enjoy for years to come without fear of hurricane damage. To prevent flooding, Raad Studio used concrete retaining walls to elevate the home 15 feet above sea level. The walls simultaneously shape the surrounding sand dunes, creating a hydrodynamic channel for water to flow through beneath the home should the waters rise.
Because the homeowners enjoy spending much of their time outdoors, creating transitional indoor-outdoor living spaces was also critical to the design process. The living room opens up to a series of decks that descend the sand dunes down to the water’s edge. Each of the terraced decks serves a specific function: an upper-level deck offers views of the ocean in the distance, one mid-level deck is used for dining, another mid-level deck has an outdoor fire pit, and the low-level deck features a plunge pool.
For each of the decks and the connecting staircases, Keuka Studios designed an Ithaca Style cable railing system. The railing features solid aluminum posts powder coated to match the home’s cedar-clad exterior. Sturdy but unobtrusive, the railing preserves the home’s stunning view. For all of our cable railing systems, we use 316 marine grade stainless steel infills which require very little maintenance and offer near transparency. In coastal regions often hit by hurricanes, cable infills serve as a great alternative to glass which can shatter in extreme winds.
