Sleek Stainless Steel Cable and Glass Railing Ideas

Stainless steel railing posts on mahogany stairs and top rail

The sleek aesthetic of stainless steel cable and railings makes a beautiful design accent for decks, stairs, and balconies. Stainless steel has a clean modern appearance while being durable with minimal maintenance. Stainless can have a brushed, mirrored, or powder-coated finish to create the desired design effect. Whether for an interior or exterior railing project we customize our stair and railing designs to fit your requirements.

modern staircase and LED lighted treads

Ultra-modern Stainless Railing and Stairs

To achieve the desired ultra-modern aesthetic for this home we created a floating zig zag stringer staircase with 316 stainless steel cables and railing posts. To accent the steps and create ambiance as well as light the stairway, we included brushed stainless steel risers that reflect the under-mounted LED lighting. These cool design elements resulted in a one-of-a-kind modern staircase.

Vertical and Horizontal Stainless Steel Cable Railing

An important design element for this home was to provide a seamless flow between the home to the patio, poolside spaces, and beyond to the ocean beaches. Equally important was to create a serene place to relax without impeding the ocean views. This clever combination of vertical and horizontal cable railings achieves this result while adhering to national pool regulations. The railings have mahogany top rails that conceal strips of LED lights to provide ambiance for nighttime entertaining. The 316 stainless steel railing posts are finished with a number 6 brushed polish. Stainless steel escutcheon plates were CNC machined to perfectly fit the posts and conceal the mounting plates.

Rustic Industrial Stainless Deck Railings

Chosen for its angular design and open cutouts our Chicago-style cable railing system adds a sleek contemporary look to any home. The industrial elements of the home include an exposed timber beam structure with large metal flanges and bolts. This combination of warm woods, clad siding, and stone create a refined and rustic appeal. Since this is a coastal home the cable railing posts are made of type 316 stainless steel and are designed to be fascia mounted to the deck.

Sleek and Sophisticated Stainless Railings

Located in Oil Nut Bay is a luxurious private community on the eastern end of Virgin Gorda in the BVI. It features a stunning beachfront, upscale villas, and world-class amenities.

When a hurricane took out the original metal railing system on this villa, the owners decided to replace it with our sleek and sophisticated high-quality 316 stainless steel Ithaca-style cable railing system. The clean lines and slim posts add a touch of elegance to the exterior of the villa. The cable infill has a transparent appearance and was the perfect choice to maintain the unobstructed views of the azure ocean waters.

Mirror Polished Stainless Railings

Mirror-polished stainless steel cable railings bring a sense of glamour and sophistication to this villa situated in the British Virgin Islands. Specifically tailored for the interior balconies, stairs, and exterior decks, these railings seamlessly blend into the surroundings, allowing the azure ocean waters to serve as a breathtaking backdrop.

Our Ithaca-style cable railings are surface mounted on the decks and balcony and fascia mounted on the stairs and made of 316 stainless steel.

Sleek Brushed Stainless Steel Cable Railing by Keuka Studios

Simply Sleek Stainless Steel Cable and Railing

As a fashion designer, this client has an eye for minimalist design. Her objective was to eliminate the appearance of joints on her railing to create a clean modern aesthetic. We were asked to design and build a stainless steel cable railing that would optimize the view and not distract the eye. She chose our Ithaca Style cable railing system for its thin posts. Since the home is located on the ocean the railing material chosen for this project is solid 316ss for the railing posts and top rail. Paying attention to every detail even the decking was designed without joints.

Nautical Style Stainless Steel with Cable and Glass

Coastal homes featuring a nautical interior design have an inviting and relaxed beachy vibe. This style for a staircase can be achieved in a variety of ways. For a couple of beach houses pictured above, we collaborated with the designers on different approaches. One homeowner preferred to use a combination of stainless steel cable connecting to wide white wood newel posts with brushed stainless round handrails. The other design style uses a glass infill with brushed stainless steel rectangular posts, round handrails, and nautical-style lighting in the stairwell. Both stair railing projects complement the charming shiplap wall paneling.

Before and After

Modern Minimal Transformation

A sleek transformation replaces a dated wood stair railing with slim stainless steel railing posts and cables. The level railing was designed to use fascia-mounted stainless steel posts along the top of the stairwell and surface-mounted posts on the steps. The cable infill creates a more visually pleasing unobstructed view making the overall space feel more open and larger. Also, the new handrail is more easily graspable than the old version.

11 Cable Railing Interior Design Ideas

living room entry with stair and balcony cable railing

Cable railing’s sleek, streamlined appearance and minimalist construction are very versatile when it comes to interior design. Over the years, Keuka Studios has worked with hundreds of clients, each with their own taste and style. We’re always delighted to see the “after” photos we receive from our customers showing us their new cable railing system and how it fits in with the overall aesthetic of their home. We’ve seen our cable railing seamlessly integrated with a wide range of interior design styles, for example industrial, farmhouse, traditional, and modern.

Considering cable railing for your home interior and need some design inspiration? Take a look at the numerous styles we’ve seen our clients bring to life in their homes:

1. Industrial

Second story curved Ithaca style cable railing with view out expansive windows

Keuka Studios crafted a railing system for this penthouse loft that overlooks the heart of downtown Denver. With exposed pipes, timber beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at an urban scene, the apartment naturally has an industrial aesthetic. When the architect renovated the building, constructed in 1882, he wanted to update the space but stay true to its original industrious design and function. In order to achieve this, he opted for a cable railing system with “Raven Black” powder-coated steel posts and a wood top rail for the loft balcony and staircase. The cable railing not only matches the architecture and interior design of the apartment, it also preserves the incredible view.

2. Coastal

Keuka studios interior and exterior railing design styles

Coastal interior design embraces natural materials, fabrics, and colors. Above all, coastal design maximizes the feeling of relaxation. For example, this beach house on the North Shore of Massachusetts incorporates natural light, stone architecture, wood furniture, and ocean hues. Keuka Studios designed an interior cable railing system to match the natural, open feel of the waterfront home. The Ithaca Style railing features “Oil-Rubbed Bronze” powder-coated solid aluminum posts and a maple top rail.

3. Modern

Minimalist interior design with cable railing stairs

This state-of-the-art residence includes all the essential features of a modern, monochromatic home. As seen in the photo above, the home has a sleek appearance and minimalist feel. All throughout the house, the interior designer incorporated metals, glass, and clean lines. For the foyer, Keuka Studios fabricated a custom zigzag floating staircase with cable railing. The railing features stainless steel posts and a white oak top rail, giving the stairwell a cool, chromatic look. To add another modern touch to the staircase, we integrated an LED lighting system into the stair treads.

4. Modern Farmhouse

Double stringer steel staircase leading from the kitchen to the second story.

This chic kitchen features exposed Douglas fir beams with wood flooring and island cabinets to match. To complete the room’s modern farmhouse look, the homeowner chose simple white walls and cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and black quartz countertops. The kitchen sits adjacent to a floating staircase with cable railing designed and fabricated by Keuka Studios. The homeowners wanted the stairs and railing to perfectly match the kitchen’s style and the existing architecture. To achieve this, we designed the cable railing system with “Raven Black” powder-coated steel posts and a maple wood top rail. The staircase features steel stringers and maple treads.

5. Tropical Modern

Keuka Studios Cable Deck Railing overlooking expansive ocean view

Located on the island of Maui, this luxurious home was designed by the world-renowned architecture firm, Olson Kundig. In order to embrace the home’s incredible natural surroundings, the architect designed transitional spaces that blur the lines between the home’s interior and outdoor living spaces. The living room pictured above embodies this design and seamlessly transitions into a cable railing deck with a view of the ocean. Our Kauai Style cable railing with black powder-coated posts and a wood top rail melds perfectly with the living room decor that extends out onto the deck. The space features all the hallmarks of tropical modern design including geometric wood furniture, natural fabrics, and rich textures.

6. Contemporary

Cable railing interior design

Keuka Studios designed and fabricated a complete cable railing system for this Long Island residence, including a railing for the interior balcony. The second-story balcony overlooks the great room which features high ceilings and large windows that face Great Pond. To match the openness of the space and the streamlined design of cable railing, the homeowners opted for a contemporary interior design scheme. They achieved this look by embracing natural lighting, choosing neutral colors, and utilizing textured fabrics. Furthermore, the homeowners chose furniture with metal accents that complement the “Sparkle Silver” powder-coated steel posts on the balcony railing.

7. Rustic

Ithaca style staircase and railing in open activity barn.

Complete with a half-sized basketball court, this open-concept “party barn” is the ultimate entertainment space. The barn has a luxurious feel and many state-of-the-art features. Nevertheless, the barn maintains a rustic aesthetic. Architect James Dixon achieved this look by incorporating a reclaimed barn board ceiling and exposed timbers. In order to match this worn appearance, we designed a cable railing system with a white oak wood top rail. In addition, we designed and built floating custom staircases with white oak treads.

8. Minimalist

Minimalist interior design with cable railing

When it comes to minimalist interior design, less is more. The owner of this California home wanted to create a modern, sparsely decorated space that embodies simplicity. In order to achieve this look, they opted for a few statement pieces of art and furniture and left the remaining space open. The kitchen/dining room features white walls and light wood flooring, creating a crisp, airy atmosphere. For the interior staircase, Keuka Studios designed a minimalist Ithaca Style cable railing system with slender end and intermediate posts. The homeowner chose polished stainless steel for the railing to match the sharp, clean look of the room.

9. Traditional

Cherry Staircase Cable Railing in the Chicago Style with Custom Newel post

Traditional style has endured the test of time and remains a popular interior design scheme. For example, our clients in Wisconsin created their dream kitchen that embodies sophistication and comfort. The staircase, flooring, and cabinets all have a gorgeous cherry hue that brings warmth to the kitchen and second-story balcony. When the homeowners contacted us about designing a railing for the balcony and stairs, they asked if we could craft a cable railing system with an elegant feel. In order to match the room’s traditional decor, we designed a railing with our intricate Chicago Style posts powder-coated bronze, stainless steel cable infill, and a wood top rail. Additionally, for even greater grandeur, we included a custom newel post at the bottom of the railing.

10. Open Concept

Interior design of Open Concept living space with floating stairs and cable railings.

Open Concept design refers to a floorplan of a home with a minimal amount of barriers or walls between functional areas of the home. Thus, creating a spacious open great room for families to live and interact with each other. This large open space allows for several activities to take place while keeping families connected in one area. Multiple furniture arrangements and area rugs can make a large room feel cozier and define separate spaces. The open-concept design approach is great for people who love to entertain since guests can visit and mingle easily throughout the great room.

Our client desired a floating stair and cable railing for the home’s entry that would maintain the open flow and spaciousness. To accomplish this, we designed an open gracefully curved floating mono stringer stair with cable railings that wrap the stair and upper-level balcony. We provided custom-machined maple treads made to fit each step.

11. Rustic Chic

Modern homeas Interior entry has a rustic chic style. The stairs feature wood treads and cable railings.

Rustic Chic combines elements of rustic design with a more refined and polished aesthetic. It often incorporates natural materials like wood and stone, with a touch of elegance through the use of sleek lines, neutral color palettes, and curated decor. This style strikes a balance between the warmth and charm of farmhouse design and the clean, sophisticated lines often associated with modern interiors. Rustic Chic spaces are comfortable and inviting while still maintaining a sense of sophistication and elegance.

Our client chose the framed Ithaca-style cable railing system for the staircase because of its slim posts and sleek design. To strike a balance between a sophisticated aesthetic and a rustic charm, they chose to include escutcheon plates to conceal the hardware.

Fascia Mount Vs. Surface Mount Vs. Undermount

Fascia Mount Railing Post on Deck and Surface Mount post on stairs and balcony

Advantages and Disadvantages

What is the difference between surface mount and fascia mounted deck railing posts?

Surface-mounted posts are mounted to the top surface of the deck, they are occasionally referred to as deck mounts, floor mounts, or even top mounts. Fascia mounted posts are mounted to the side of the deck and sometimes are referred to as side mounts or joist mounts.

What is an Undermount deck railing post?

Undermounted deck railing posts are designed to appear to slice through the surface of the deck and have all the mounting hardware attach the post to the structure below the surface decking.

I always get customers asking me how to attach their railing to their application. While there are many different ways to attach your railing, the most popular methods are mounting to the fascia or mounting to the surface. In addition, many clients opt for the more sleek and modern style of under mounting the posts.

7 Mountain View Cable Railing Decks

A home tucked away in the mountains that overlook vast forests and valleys is any nature lover’s dream. With an organic mountain vista all around you, the architecture of your home shouldn’t stand in the way of the view. Rather, it should enhance it. By installing cable railing on your deck or patio, your mountain home can have both a modern design and a natural, unobstructed view.

Keuka Studios has created cable railing systems for homes in mountain ranges across the U.S. To name a few, we’ve designed railings for clients in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, the Rocky Mountains of Montana, and the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Also, we’ve designed railings for clients in Canada. For example, we crafted a custom railing for a client in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia. All of our railing systems arrive at their destination ready for assembly.

If you need design ideas for your future railing system, take a look at these cable railings we’ve crafted to help maximize aerial views.

5 Considerations For Choosing Railing Color

Cable railing image in the evening light.

Part of planning your outdoor deck project is thinking about what the railing color should be. This can be perplexing or lots of fun! Your home color is a personal choice, and your railing color will be a personal choice too.

Here are some things to consider when selecting your cable railing colors.

Which is more important to you?

Is it the look of your deck and railing from the outside of your house, or how it will look from the inside of your house?

deck railing color from inside and outside
Looking at the home from the outside vs. from indoors.

Which railing color will best blend in with your view?

Dark colors generally blend in better with a forest view and stand out against a water view. Lighter colors blend in better with ocean and lake views.

Notice how the dark color of the railing posts blends in with the trees.

What type of experience do you want while enjoying your deck?

One way to think about railing color is to establish a theme for your deck space. Should your space provoke a specific feeling or mood? Do you want it to feel Zen-like, nautical, rustic, or modern?

More passive or neutral colors can give a soothing Zen-like feeling to your outdoor space. Silvers, whites, and stainless steel can look more nautical or modern. Browns and greens can feel more rustic and blend in better with a backyard garden space.

Did you know light conditions can greatly affect the appearance of railing color?

It is important to look at color samples in the area where they will be used. Whether you’re planning an outdoor deck railing project or an indoor staircase, look at color samples in natural light. Direct sunlight is best. Observe the railing color sample during the daytime and evening. Observe the railing color in the environment that the color will be used. The eye perceives color differently on vertical surfaces than it does on horizontal and curved surfaces. If the color is being applied to a vertical surface, be sure to look at the sample on a vertical surface. This will give you a better perspective on how the color will actually look.

Should the railing color match the outside of the house or accent it?

Many times we are asked by customers, “should the railing color match the house color, window trim, or accent color?” These are important things to consider. Contrasting colors can be used to accent or draw attention to the railing, making the railing a focal point. Similar colors can make the railing posts appear to blend in with the home. See these example images below showing different railing color variations. These images may help you visualize how your completed project will look.

wood rail vs metal rail

matching the trim or the siding
Railing matches siding vs. trim.

Why choose just one color for your railing?

You can create contrast or similarity depending on the aesthetic and architectural style you are trying to achieve. The top railing can be powder-coated in a contrasting color to the railing posts, or they can be the same color to create more uniformity.

Deck with railing top rail different than post as compared to Deck with top rail the same as the posts

I hope this has helped you to make your railing color choice easier, so have fun with your project! For more color options see this page on our 6 signature colors. There are thousands of custom colors available for metal railings so you can create a style you’ll love.

Gorgeous Gate Styles and Ideas

What kind of gate is right for you? There are plenty of reasons to consider adding a gate to your railing project. Gates can perform a variety of functions. They can be used for safety, containment, security, or just decorative. In addition to being functional, your gate should seamlessly integrate with your architecture and the railing design. Whether for a backyard, deck, pool surround, or driveway entrance, the gate is often the first impression your guests encounter. Why not make it special?

Garden Gate with access to water feature

Garden Gate

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo created a gorgeous garden scape entrance featuring a stream and a footbridge, as a natural oasis for zoo visitors to enjoy while waiting to enter the zoo. The curving boardwalks meandering throughout the garden are lined with Keuka cable railings to keep visitors out of unwanted areas. The lockable pedestrian garden gate was made to integrate with the cable railing system. This gate is used as access to the landscape and waterways for routine maintenance.

The gate must be at least 4 ft high, self-closing, self-latching, have a childproof locking mechanism, and open outward away from the pool. There are additional spacing requirements to be considered including distance from grade to the bottom rail, and vertical post spacing. Referencing your local building code pool requirements is recommended as this may vary in different municipalities. This double gate was custom made to fit the size of the stair opening. It is made of 316 stainless steel with vertical cables and a wood top rail. The gate is mounted tight to the stone walls surrounding the lower section of the pool.

This Kauai Island home, aptly named “Hale Ike Mala” ( or “Love of the Garden”), incorporates our Kauai Style cable railing.
